Disaster and Emergency Preparedness: Starting ‘Em Young

SCHOOL BASED DRRM (IEC-Campaign and Drill)

A series of school-based Disaster Risk Reduction and Management, Information, Education, and Communication (IEC-Campaign and Drills) for the public and private schools in the city were conducted in August 2018 up to present by virtue of the implementing rules and regulation of RA 10121, known as the Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) Act, along with The Department of Education, Iligan City’s Center for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (ICDRRMO).

The school-based disaster preparedness campaign and drill conducted by ICDRRMO started last August 24, 2018 at San Miguel Village School, Palao, Iligan City. It was already on its 23rd school when it covered Digkila-an Central School and Digkila-an National High School at Barangay Digkila-an, Iligan City by November 26, 2018.

As part of RA 10121’s implementation and support, the ICDRRMO conducted the series of IEC-Campaign and Drill activities which included film showings, lectures on different types of disasters and emergencies, earthquake drill, as well as basic bandaging skills.

The importance of disaster management in schools at an early age is crucial, and it begins with awareness of disasters and preparedness in case disaster happen.

National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Framework

The Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act (RA 10121), is an Act that provides a comprehensive approach to disaster risk management through the development of a national framework and formulation of the National Disaster Risk Management Plan (NDRMP).

This master plan was implemented to provide strategies and other guidelines on how the country deals with disasters or emergencies.

From mere response to preparedness, the plan hopes to achieve responsive disaster risk management by 2019 in all levels — from institutional, organizational, to individual levels.
